On the southern shore of the island sits Galle, historically known as Point de Galle. Galle dates to the 13th century, and maybe even earlier, but under Portuguese administration it rose to prominence as the island's principal port (1507–c. 1640). It served as the island's capital during the Dutch era until Colombo took its place in 1656. Galle's decline was caused by the development of Colombo's port in the second half of the 19th century, but because of congestion there, some shipping has been redirected to Galle. The city has adequate road and rail connections and is located 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Colombo.
